Engineering Doctorate in Sustainability for Engineering and Energy Systems
The design, development and build of five ‘green’ outside broadcast vehicles driven by the concept of Design for the Environment
The University of Surrey hosts a prestigious EPSRC-funded Industrial Doctorate Centre offering an EngD in Sustainability for Engineering and Energy Systems (see www.surrey.ac.uk/engd/sees). The EngD is awarded for doctoral research carried out within a framework of relevant industrial experience and professional development courses. The four-year programme provides at least the intellectual challenge of a PhD and EngD Research Engineers (REs) will normally spend approximately three-quarters of their time based with their sponsor.
A studentship is available with Sony Broadcast and Professional Europe, a global leader in providing products, solutions and services for professional use, including Broadcast & Media, Video Security, 4K & 3D Digital Cinema and more.
Outside Broadcast (OB) vans are required for concerts, sports events and other outside activities where the infrastructure for image and sound capture and subsequent transmission are not readily available on-site. Their energy consumption, fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions are high as the vehicles must travel long distances between events. Up to now, there has been little research into the environmental impact of these vans and this project therefore aims to re-evaluate the design of an OB, including both the vehicle and broadcasting equipment, with a view to designing a methodology to improve overall environmental performance. Design for Environment strategies and tools will be applied as appropriate and the results from these will be combined with other interlinked research areas to identify successful approaches to the OB vehicle concept and build.
The Research Engineer recruited will be based with Sony’s Outside Broadcast Unit in Basingstoke, Hampshire.
Person Specification
We are looking for a mature, motivated team-player with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels from shop floor to senior management, and with different cultures. The suitable candidate will be an electrical/mechanical engineer with a good bachelor’s degree (at least a 2.1) and preferably a relevant MSc. They will have a keen interest and good level of understanding of environmental issues and will ideally have some experience of TV production and/or outside broadcast.
The candidate should also have:
* The ability to work with and manipulate large volumes of data;
* An understanding of the design process of mobile units;
* An understanding of business objectives in a blue chip company.
Funding Details
The stipend for this EngD studentship is £25,000 per annum (the majority of which is tax-free). To be eligible for funding, applicants must demonstrate a relevant connection with the UK (see www.epsrc.ac.uk/PostgraduateTraining/StudentEligibility.htm).
Closing date: 9am,21st March 2011. Interviews will take place on Wednesday 30th March at Sony Broadcast and Professional Europe in Basingstoke.
