Henrik Barman Michelsen is the first winner of a new prize intended to reward the most promising student to graduate from LIPA's Sound Technology degree course. The prize-giving took place during the annual graduation ceremony at LIPA (Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) on 30 July, which was attended by LIPA lead patron Sir Paul McCartney.

Guitarist and songwriter Michelson (pictured here, second from right, during the ceremony with, L to R, LIPA's Jon Thornton, MPG chairman Steve Levine and MPG director Tony Platt) has already completed work experience assignments in London at Assault & Battery and Miloco Studios, and is currently working as part of a three-piece songwriting/production team called JEM Songs.

As a result of the MPG Prize, he will receive mentoring from producers such as Levine, Platt, Mick Glossop and Andrew Hunt, and will spend two weeks as an intern at Kore Studios, London. He will also have the opportunity to log studio time with MPG/BRIT Awards Producer of the Year Paul Epworth, Air Mastering engineer Ray Staff and producer/engineer Haydn Bendall, and will be given tuition on the D-Control console at Avid's UK HQ.

Prism Sound/SADiE has offered to contribute towards the cost of Michelsen's travel and accommodation expenses while he is taking up these opportunities.

Tony Platt, who was recently honoured by LIPA with a Companionship in recognition of his contribution to the world of arts and entertainment, commented: "The Music Producers Guild has established this prize in conjunction with LIPA because we want to recognise the student who, in the opinion of his or her tutors, has shown the most exceptional talent, initiative, commitment and consideration to the art of music recording and production. This will be a great opportunity for Henrik and [I] look forward to mentoring him while he establishes himself in his chosen career."

Michelsen added: "This is a fantastic opportunity and I am really thrilled to be the recipient of such a wonderful prize."
